Holds Precision Optical Metrology Seminar at the University of Arizona — Draws Many Astronomy Resea

On June 25, 2026, Dr. Jungjae Park (R&D Director at MeterLab) gave a technical talk titled "Mirror Alignment and Beyond" at the James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona. The talk lasted about one hour. Wyant College is one of the world's top schools for optics and optical measurement. It does a lot of research on aligning large telescopes and on precision measurement. Many researchers came to the seminar and showed strong interest, including Dr. Joseph C. Shields, Director of the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory (LBTO).

In his talk, Dr. Park presented research he has done in precision optical measurement at KAIST, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). He explained several technologies: a method to measure the exact shape of large optical mirrors, a method to measure the thickness, refractive index, and warping of 300 mm wafers at the same time, and a method to measure long distances very precisely using an optical frequency comb. For each one, he explained how it works. He also presented several sensors that MeterLab has built using spectrometers and hyperspectral devices to measure thickness and shape. This gave the audience a clear picture of how many different measurement tools MeterLab has developed.

After the talk, there was a lively question-and-answer session. People asked about the basic principles behind spectral interferometry, how light source bandwidth and resolution affect measurement performance, and why high-speed spectrometers are needed. Many questions focused on real-world performance. The audience was especially interested in how one sensor platform can measure many different things — mirror shape, wafer properties, and long-distance measurements. The seminar ended with active discussion and strong interest from everyone who attended.
